The name Lieuwke (= little lion) was not used as a house name and certainly not on the corner Grote Gracht/Capucijnenstraat.
That name only appeared around 1960 as a cafe name, referring to the lion that was then placed on top of the facade. That was only possible on top of what is now a kind of bell gable.
In the archive photo this has not yet happened. Back then the name Lieuwke was nowhere to be seen and it only said BEER HALL, wed Weltens, Verlof.
A bell gable was a great rarity in Maastricht with all its gabled roofs, as was the case with neighbour Hassink.
He had a saddlery and to advertise his business he had a life-size stuffed horse in the window for the youngsters to marvel at.
