We will not venture a judgement on the spelling of the word PLYEM, but in VERGLULDE there is at least one spelling error.
Although it was usually assumed that this stone had something to do with an upholsterer who provided hats with feathers, research in the 'gichten' (=register of purchases and sales) has revealed that the namesake was one Caspar Stuchy, who was a rag-and-bone man as well as a slumlord. Other houses that he built or rebuilt in this street got very different names like THE GOLDEN TRUMPET, THE BIG PIPE and THE WINE GRAPE. From these names it is not clear whether there was a planned choice of name with background.
